Lithium Ion Polymer Batteries
Lithium polymer batteries are used for portable communication devices, also known as mobile communication products, including notebook computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), handheld personal computers (HPCs) and cellular telephones.
This battery technology offers distinct advantages over other technologies. The batteries are thinner, lighter and generally achieve longer operating times than many other rechargeable batteries currently in the market. Unlike competing liquid lithium ion batteries that often require a metal casing to hold liquid electrolyte, lithium polymer batteries are manufactured with a foil casing, which makes them less bulky and less costly to produce.
AEROSIL® fumed silica is applied in lithium ion polymer batteries for the following effects:
- absorption of plasticizer / electrolyte
- reinforcing - good mechanical properties of the polymer
- high chemical purity

Thickening and reinforcing effect:
- stabilization of polymer gel electrolyte for good processability
- assistant of gelation of electrolyte without reducing the conductivity
- good dimensional stability to avoid damaging of the layers during manufacturing process
- gel-type structure to avoid leakage
Permeability of the battery separator layer:
- to adjust the porosity of the separator film
- keep electrolyte in the separator film
Temperature stability:
- reduced thermal deformation of layers
Adhesion effect:
- improve adhesion properties between cathode and electrolyte as well as anode and electrolyte. This could improve the conductivity as well.
