AEROSIL® products provide a set of properties in Silicone Rubber and Sealants. To adjust the rheological properties of RTV-1C Silicone Sealants, RTV-2C- and Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR/LIMS) a variety of different hydrophilic and hydrophobic AEROSIL® grades with specific functionality are available. Reinforcement and heat stability are often very important for a multitude of applications of HTV/HCR and LSR. For many applications, e.g. medical devices, electronic and sports goods, structural glazing or products of our daily life like baby bottle nipples, a high transparency is requested by the end user. Without fumed oxides many of the desired properties of the final Silicone Rubber products could not be achieved.
Standard AEROSIL® grades with high surface areas, e.g. AEROSIL® 300 offer already an acceptable degree of optical properties. However for Evonik Degussa´s researchers the target was to provide an AEROSIL® fumed oxide providing excellent optical properties, especially for high transparent applications. Therefore we developed a new and innovative production process, which enables us to adjust the structure of our new AEROSIL® products, e.g. AEROSIL® 300 SP, which is highly suitable for HTV and LSR.
Apart from excellent transparency levels, the new SP-grades can provide several advantages. It is possible to achieve higher silica loadings in the master batch process. Easy compounding and fast hydrophobization (“in-situ”) results in a reduced batch time. Not only a higher capacity can be gained, also other important Silicone Rubber properties like crepe-hardening, mechanical and optical properties can be influenced in a very positive way.
