Improvement of scratch and mar resistance of UV-curing coatings

By using the newly modified fumed silica AEROSIL^® R 7200, the scratch and mar resistance of UV-curing coating systems is substantially improved.

The remaining gloss of a coating film is increased up to 35 % after scratching depending on the binder system. AEROSIL^® R 7200 shows almost no thickening effect and can therefore be used as an active filler. Using the customary dispersing methods, incorporation of up to 20 % can be achieved.

It should be noted that neither the rheological properties of the liquid coating nor the optical qualities of the cured films are negatively influenced by using such high amounts of fumed silica.
