AEROSIL® fumed silica and AEROXIDE® fumed metal oxides for batteries


AEROSIL® fumed silica is a highly dispersible silicon dioxide.


Using the AEROSIL-process, other special oxides such as fumed aluminium oxide, e.g. AEROXIDE® Alu C, titanium dioxide, e.g. AEROXIDE® TiO₂ P 25 have been developed. The surface of AEROSIL® or AEROXIDE® particles can be chemically modified by reaction of the OH groups on the silica or metal oxide surface with various silanes, resulting in hydrophobic fumed silicas and hydrophobic metal oxides. For easy handling, AEROSIL® and AEROXIDE® can also be dispersed in water or other solvents. The stable dispersions are marketed under the brand name AERODISP®.

AEROSIL® is used as efficient gel forming additive for the manufacturing of gels in lead acid batteries and as electrolyte additives in lithium polymer batteries. AEROXIDE® fumed alumina and AERODISP® are successfully used as ceramic additive in lithium-ion battery separators and as coating additive for cathode materials.
